Which Power Tool Brand is Best?

When you’re starting out as a DIYer, it can seem as if you’ll never learn all there is to know about the various projects that can upgrade your home – the reality is that as you compete each job you’ll know a little more than you did before, but even construction professionals learn something new every day. The same is true when you start purchasing your power tools – it would be easy to only buy a certain brand because of its reputation for being the best, but as you gain experience – you may form your own opinions as to what tool features are desirable and which are right for your collection.

Is there a Best Brand of Power Tool?

When it comes to power tools for the DIYer, there are two types of people – those who stick with a certain brand regardless of what type of tool they’re purchasing and those who buy what they consider to be the best tool in a certain category regardless of brand. It’s much the same as families and automobiles – some people will always choose a Ford, Mercedes, or BMW no matter what style they’re looking for, but others might choose a Porsche if they want a sports car and a Subaru as an all around family vehicle.

Is there an answer to which is the best brand of power tool? It all depends on who you ask – you may get 10 different answers from 10 different DIYers and construction professionals. There are many great brands to choose from and you may have to form your own opinion of which you consider to be the best or there may be different bests – depending on which type of tool you’re considering. A few good brands of power tools:

  • Milwaukee
  • Makita
  • Bosch
  • DeWalt
  • Porter-Cable
  • Delta
  • Rockwell
  • Hitachi
  • Metabo
  • Ryobi
  • Skil
  • Craftsman
  • Black and Decker

This list is in no particular order and there may be some very good companies that were left off accidentally. Some companies on the list such as Delta and Rockwell specialize in larger power tools such as you might find in a well stocked workshop and leave the portable tools to manufacturers such as Porter-Cable, Makita, and Ryobi. Each of the companies on this list makes very good tools that should work well for any home improvement project you have planned.

Power Tool Reviews

One of the best methods for determining which brand or model of power tool might be best for your application is to read reviews provided by people who have purchased and used the tools. You can often find these types of reviews in home improvement magazines, on power tool and woodworking websites, and even on the manufacturers’ websites.

Always keep in mind when reading power tool reviews that some aspects of using a tool can be very personal. If several reviewers report that a certain circular saw has a blade brake that doesn’t work properly, then that fact should be of concern to all DIYers considering that saw. However, if a reviewer reports that a drill or sander seems too light or heavy, that might be in comparison to an older tool used for many years and might have absolutely no bearing on whether you should purchase the reviewed power tool.
