Tips for Buying Power Tools Online
The jury’s in and it appears the Internet isn’t just a passing fad after all – it’s definitely here to stay. The web places a world of information at your fingertips and allows you to shop for just about anything from the comfort of your home, but as convenient and helpful as the Internet can be – you still need to exercise some caution when dealing with online vendors. Most Internet power tool retailers are first rate businesses that provide the opportunity to purchase well known tools at good prices, but it doesn’t hurt to do a little research before deciding on a vendor.
Considerations when Purchasing Power Tools Online
There are pros and cons to purchasing your tools online just as there can be with any product sold over the Internet. When you shop online, you can find just about any brand or type of tool that’s made without driving from store to store and they’re often at very competitive pricing. However, when buying online you don’t get a chance to actually hold a tool to find out how it feels in your hand and you can’t simply drive back to the store with your receipt if there’s a problem. A few other considerations when buying power tools online:
- Reviews – many online power tool retailers give purchasers an opportunity to post a review of the tool they purchased and the retailer’s performance during the buying and shipping process. This allows you to discover what other DIYers and construction professionals thought of the tool after having a chance to use it for a while and you’re not going to find this valuable resource at most local home improvement stores. This can be a great way to find out some helpful information about a tool that may not be posted on the manufacturer’s website.
- Returns and Warranties – what is the online retailer’s policy about returning a product if it doesn’t work or it was damaged during shipping? Do you return it to them, do you send it to the manufacturer, or do you have to locate an authorized repair shop? An online retailer that simply sends you a new tool when they receive the original back is usually the best situation – let them deal with the paperwork of returning it to the manufacturer.
- Shipping – what is the online vendor’s shipping policy? Many businesses offer free shipping if your purchase is over a certain amount and that can be quite a savings for heavier power tools such as mitre and radial arm saws.
- Customer Service – does the online retailer have a toll free customer service phone number where you can speak to a live person or are you stuck with never ending phone menus or sending emails that may or may not be returned? A real live person is always best – especially if they’re helpful.
Many people feel that the helpful tool reviews, competitive pricing, and vast selection make online shopping the route to follow when you’re considering a power tool purchase and they may be correct if you’re confident the vendor is reliable and has a good reputation. It might also be helpful to find a friend or associate who already has the tool you’re considering – how a tool feels in your hand can be a very personal issue and you’re not going to find that answer in an online review.
